my sky broadband takes about 4hrs to connect to the Internet. I’ve tried pinging the router and got an answer
dan asked:
the operating system is windows 98. I've pinged the router and it came back with an answer but not to either the yahoo ip adress or the google adress. Did get it connected once but will not connect now. I've tried to look at the router homepage and fiddled around a bit but to no avail.
sick

I suggest you complain to/confer with your ISP.
Hope that helps.

If you know what the problem is…and you don’t know how to fix it…try typing in the IPaddress in the address bar…
how to find the ipaddress: click start
run
type “cmd” w/out quotes
then type ipconfig/all
it will come up
but it sounds like you don’t need this info..because it seems like you know what ur talking about haha.

It sounds like your connection from your pc to the LAN side of your router is solid becauase of a successful ping response to pinging the default gateway.
You indicate that you cannot successfullyi ping the yahoo address. I presume you get no response from the command ping yahoo.com. This suggests that either the DNS setting on the public side of your router or on the private side of your router is the problem.
However you should ping the numeric IP address of a DNS server (e.g. ping 4.2.2.2) and see if you get a reply first. If you get a reply from ping 4.2.2.2 your problem is the DNS settings. If not, there is a problem with general connectivity. I would shut down the modem and router and pcs for AT LEAST 0.5 minutes; bring up the modem and at least 0.5 min after that start the router and then after at least 0.5 min bring up the pcs. If ping 4.2.2.2 still fails, remove the router from the circuit; turn off the pc and modem; connect the pc directly to the modem and bring up the modem and 0.5 min later bring up the pc and try again. If ping 4.2.2.2 still fails call the ISP for further help while you are configured directly to modem from pc.
Now if you were successful in ping 4.2.2.2 and not in ping yahoo.com check router settings. With a dynamic IP you should see on the WAN config page that you should obtain DNS automatically. On the LAN config page, you should assign dynamic IP addresses via DHCP. Save your settings. Now if this is properly set, your router is faulty. You should see if they have newer firmware and if so install it; if not it is router replacement time.
